Google says it has cracked a quantum computing challenge with new chip



Google has announced a major breakthrough in quantum computing with the introduction of a new chip called **Willow**, which has successfully solved a complex computing problem in just **five minutes**—a task that would take a classical computer longer than the **entire history of the universe** to complete. This milestone marks a significant step in Google's quest to revolutionize computing with quantum technology, which promises to vastly outpace the speeds of today's most powerful computers.

While the specific problem solved by the Willow chip does not yet have practical applications, Google believes that quantum computers could one day address challenges in fields like **medicine**, **battery chemistry**, and **artificial intelligence** that are too complex for current computers. The Willow chip uses **105 qubits** (quantum bits), the fundamental units of quantum computing. However, qubits are highly sensitive and can be easily disturbed by even tiny events, such as subatomic particles from space, leading to errors.

For decades, scientists have been working on **quantum error correction** to address these issues. Google's breakthrough, published in the journal **Nature**, involves a method of linking the qubits in a way that minimizes errors, even as the number of qubits increases. This advancement also includes the ability to correct errors in **real time**, a crucial development for making quantum computers practical and reliable for real-world use.

Hartmut Neven, head of Google's Quantum AI unit, stated, "We are past the break-even point," highlighting the significance of the progress made. In the past, IBM challenged Google's previous claims about the potential of quantum computers, but Google has now provided updated estimates, saying that even under the most favorable conditions, a classical computer would take over **a billion years** to perform the same task that the Willow chip completes in minutes.

Although some competitors have developed chips with more qubits, Google is prioritizing the reliability of its qubits. To support this, Google has built its own **dedicated fabrication facility** for the Willow chips, allowing faster development and testing of future quantum chips. These chips are stored in specialized refrigerators called **cryostats** to maintain the extreme cold necessary for quantum experiments.

This progress positions Google as a key player in the race for **quantum supremacy**, a new frontier in computing.
