OpenAI releases text-to-video model Sora for ChatGPT Plus and Pro users

OpenAI has launched its text-to-video AI model, Sora, for ChatGPT Plus and Pro users, marking a significant expansion into multimodal AI technologies. Sora, which was first introduced in February, had been limited to safety testers during its research preview phase. Now, it is available at no extra cost to paid users of ChatGPT, under the name Sora Turbo.

The new model allows users to create videos from text, offering up to 1080p resolution, with videos lasting up to 20 seconds. The videos can be generated in various aspect ratios, including widescreen, vertical, and square, making it a versatile tool for content creators. This development puts OpenAI in competition with other tech giants like Meta, Google, and Stability AI, which are also working on similar text-to-video technologies.

Although the tool is now available in many regions, OpenAI has confirmed that Sora will not be available in the EU, Switzerland, and the UK at this time. However, the company plans to make Sora accessible in more regions as it continues to refine the product. OpenAI has also emphasized its commitment to safety by implementing measures to prevent harmful content, such as child sexual abuse materials and sexual deepfakes, from being created using the model. Initially, the ability to upload images of people will be restricted, but this feature will be expanded as OpenAI works on improving its deepfake detection and mitigation systems.

The launch of Sora represents another step in OpenAI's mission to develop sophisticated AI tools that can handle multiple forms of media, from text to video. The company is also working on a pricing structure for different types of users, which it plans to introduce early next year.
