Adani Group founder denies US bribery allegations, vows legal action

Gautam Adani, the founder of the Adani Group, has denied the bribery allegations made against him by U.S. authorities, which accuse him and his associates of paying $265 million in bribes to secure power supply contracts in India. Speaking publicly for the first time about the charges, Adani rejected the allegations as "baseless" during an awards ceremony in Jaipur. He reaffirmed that the Adani Group is committed to "world-class regulatory compliance."

The U.S. authorities have also accused the Adani Group of misleading U.S. investors during fundraising activities. This new indictment adds to the group's ongoing challenges, marking a second major crisis for the business empire in just two years. Adani referred to previous allegations about compliance practices at Adani Green Energy, stating that the group had faced similar challenges before.

The allegations have sparked a broader political and economic storm in India, with some states reconsidering their business relationships with the Adani Group. International investors, such as France’s TotalEnergies, have paused their investments in the group. Key figures named in the indictment include Gautam Adani, his nephew Sagar Adani, and Vneet S. Jaain, the managing director of Adani Green Energy. U.S. authorities claim that the three orchestrated illegal payments to win power contracts in India and misled investors in the U.S.

Despite the serious nature of the allegations, the Adani Group has strongly denied them and vowed to pursue legal action. Gautam Adani, addressing the situation, expressed confidence, saying that every challenge makes the company stronger and more resilient.

The allegations have already had a huge financial impact, with the market value of Adani Group's listed companies dropping by $34 billion. However, the group's stock prices have since begun to recover, aided by the support of partners and investors.

On the political side, the Indian government has distanced itself from the case, confirming that it has not received any formal request from U.S. authorities. However, the controversy has sparked debates in India's parliament, with some lawmakers calling for investigations into the matter.
