On Saturday, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari spoke out about the government's plans to potentially ban certain political parties. Addressing his party's foundation day gathering via video link, Bilawal clarified that the government had not consulted the PPP leadership on this matter. He stated that while the government might be considering banning parties with no significant political influence, the PPP does not support banning any political party or imposing governor rule in any province.
Bilawal also called for immediate action from the government to address the ongoing issue of inflation, which continues to affect ordinary people. He criticized some federal policies, particularly the proposal to build six new canals. He warned that the plan could harm national unity and urged the federal government to engage in dialogue with the provinces to prevent conflict over this matter. If the government pushes forward with the plan "forcefully," the PPP would not support it.
He also addressed the issues in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), where the provincial government has been threatening the central government instead of focusing on solving its own problems. Bilawal emphasized that the PPP has always acted in the best interest of Pakistan, despite facing setbacks or being sidelined during election campaigns.
Bilawal spoke about the PPP’s achievements, including the 18th Amendment and the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), which he believes have positively impacted the lives of many Pakistanis. He also raised concerns over the resurgence of terrorism in KP and Balochistan, emphasizing that all provinces are feeling its impact and calling for collective efforts to restore peace and security.
Paying tribute to his late mother, Benazir Bhutto, and grandfather, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Bilawal reiterated his party's commitment to democratic values, social welfare, and economic justice. He also rejected the idea of imposing governor's rule or banning political parties, stressing that such actions would hinder Pakistan's democratic progress.
Lastly, Bilawal urged the government to reconsider its policies on firewalls and VPNs, which could impact the digital freedoms of citizens.
