A large-scale crackdown on Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protesters took place in Islamabad on Tuesday night, as law enforcement forces moved in to clear key protest areas. The operation, which involved around 1,500 police personnel from Punjab and Islamabad, as well as Rangers and ATS commandos, aimed to restore order in areas like Kulsoom Plaza Chowk and Blue Area, which had been blocked by protesters.
Reports indicate that the main protest convoy, consisting of PTI workers, has now dispersed. However, there are reports that Imran Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur managed to escape the scene. Earlier, it had been suggested that both Bushra Bibi and Gandapur were likely to be arrested. The two left their protest containers about two hours before the crackdown started, and since then, there has been no contact between them and the party leadership, raising questions about their whereabouts.
The operation also saw intense confrontations, with reports of heavy shelling and gunfire between Khyber Chowk and Kulsoom Plaza as police advanced toward the protest zones. During the operation, a key container used by PTI protesters caught fire near Kulsoom Plaza Chowk, though the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
Earlier in the evening, security forces, including Rangers and local police, successfully cleared key locations like D-Chowk and China Chowk. The protesters were pushed back to Kulsoom Plaza Chowk and Khyber Plaza Chowk, and heavy security forces were deployed to secure these vacated areas. To prevent further protests, police teams, equipped with teargas, were stationed on the rooftops of nearby buildings. Tear gas was used intermittently to disperse remaining protesters.
As part of the crackdown, authorities also took measures to shut down street lights in the Blue Area and along adjacent roads on Jinnah Avenue to limit visibility. Over 500 PTI workers were arrested, and security forces worked to restore blockades and clear protest-related obstacles from Jinnah Avenue. The government has made it clear that no negotiations will take place with PTI protesters, signaling their determination to stop the demonstrations.
This major crackdown on PTI protests is the latest development in a growing political crisis in Pakistan, with the government seeking to quell unrest caused by the party’s protests and marches.
