On Wednesday, Rawalpindi police officially arrested Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), in connection with a protest held by his party on September 28, 2024. Khan, who is already in jail for a different case, was arrested at Adiala Jail, where he is currently being held. The police made the arrest after charges were formally filed against him at the New Town police station.
Imran Khan faces several serious charges, including several sections of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) and the Pakistan Penal Code. These charges include accusations related to sections 353 (assaulting public servants), 186 (obstructing officials), 285 and 286 (possessing dangerous weapons), 148 and 149 (rioting), 427 (causing property damage), 109 (abetment), and 188 (disobedience to orders). These charges are linked to his involvement in a violent protest organized by PTI.
Even though Khan is already incarcerated for other legal matters, this new arrest adds to his mounting legal troubles. He will appear in court tomorrow, where a judge will decide if he should be kept in custody for further investigation or granted bail.
Interestingly, this arrest came just hours after the Islamabad High Court granted Khan bail in the Toshakhana case earlier that morning. Imran Khan's legal situation is becoming more complicated, with his lawyer, Salman Safdar, mentioning that the matter would now be handled by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).
Imran Khan's ongoing legal battles have sparked widespread debates in Pakistan, with his supporters and critics alike keeping a close watch on his case. His arrest in the PTI protest case, following his bail in another matter, shows how complex his legal challenges are. Many are now questioning the future of his political career and what this means for PTI in the upcoming months. Stay tuned as the story develops.
