PTI's "Final Showdown": Islamabad Locked Down Amid Protests and Security Threats

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), led by former Prime Minister Imran Khan, is set to hold a major protest in Islamabad today, November 24, demanding Khan’s release and pushing for other party demands. Dubbed the "final showdown," the protest will take place at D-Chowk, but the federal capital has been locked down to prevent demonstrators from reaching the site. Key highways and entry points have been sealed off.

PTI's Determination

Convoys from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, led by Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, are scheduled to reach Islamabad. Despite the roadblocks and security restrictions, PTI leaders have vowed to press on. Gandapur declared that they would use any means necessary, including private machinery, to remove the barriers and reach the protest site. He emphasized that the protest will continue, even if it takes up to 100 hours.

Security Concerns and Government Warnings

The government has stepped up security in the capital, deploying over 30,000 police officers, including forces from other provinces, to maintain order. Islamabad's streets are under heavy surveillance, and several key roads leading into the city, including routes from Lahore and Peshawar, have been blocked. The National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA) has also issued a terrorism threat warning, citing possible attacks from militants who recently crossed the Pak-Afghan border.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has warned of strict action against any protesters who violate the law, emphasizing that disruptions during a high-level visit from Belarus are not acceptable.

Increased Police Activity

To prevent violence, police have arrested over 300 PTI workers ahead of the protest, with more raids planned to detain activists. Despite these efforts, PTI leaders, including Shandana Gulzar, remain resolute in their decision to carry out the protest, regardless of government measures.

Impact on Public Services

The lockdown has caused significant disruptions for the public, with metro services suspended and major roads closed. However, flight operations are not affected, and the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has assured travelers that airports are operating as usual.

Stay tuned for further updates as the situation develops.
