Netanyahu Fires Defence Minister Gallant Amid Ongoing Conflict

In a surprising move, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, citing a “crisis of trust” as his reason. Replacing Gallant with Israel Katz, Netanyahu aims to maintain tight control over Israel’s military strategies in Gaza and Lebanon. This decision, however, has sparked significant controversy, with opposition leader Yair Lapid calling the action “an act of madness” given the nation’s state of war.

The dismissal followed a period of growing discord between Gallant and Netanyahu over the 13-month-long conflict with Hamas. Gallant had recently ordered 7,000 draft notices for ultra-Orthodox men, a decision that angered certain factions within Netanyahu’s coalition who oppose their conscription. Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir praised Gallant’s removal, arguing that he lacked a commitment to “absolute victory” in Gaza and Lebanon.

Upon assuming his new role, Katz pledged to prioritize the safe return of Israeli hostages held in Gaza and to dismantle militant operations in both regions. His statements have been supported by the U.S., which called Gallant a “valuable partner” while expressing readiness to collaborate with Katz.

Conflict Intensifies in Northern Gaza

Israel has escalated its military campaign in northern Gaza, issuing evacuation orders to residents and launching airstrikes. Palestinian health officials report over 35 fatalities in the latest attacks, including casualties from strikes in Beit Lahiya, Gaza City, and other central areas. The ongoing airstrikes are part of Israel’s broader strategy to remove what it calls “terrorist infrastructure sites,” with Palestinian medics describing widespread displacement and humanitarian challenges.

This conflict, which began after the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel by Hamas, has seen heavy casualties. Gaza’s health authorities report over 43,300 Palestinian deaths so far, with thousands more displaced amid ongoing strikes and evacuations.

International concerns continue to mount, with France's foreign minister set to visit the region, urging Israel to pursue diplomatic solutions alongside its military operations.
