Microsoft launches a Mac Mini lookalike, but it’s not for everyone

Microsoft has launched a new compact desktop device, the Windows 365 Link, designed mainly for business users who rely on cloud computing. Announced at the Microsoft Ignite 2024 conference, the device resembles Apple's Mac mini in its small, black box design. However, unlike Apple's Mac mini, which runs on local hardware and chips like the M4 or M4 Pro, the Windows 365 Link operates entirely in the cloud.

This new device is quite minimal in terms of hardware, equipped with 8GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, and an unspecified Intel processor. The specifications are secondary to its main function—streaming Windows from the cloud rather than running a local operating system. This makes it ideal for businesses that want to avoid investing in powerful local machines but still need access to high-performance virtual machines in the cloud.

Microsoft’s focus with this device is on security. Since all data is stored and encrypted in the cloud, it reduces the risk of local data breaches or theft. The Windows 365 Link also offers solid connectivity options, including USB-C, USB-A, DisplayPort, HDMI, Ethernet, Wi-Fi 6E, and Bluetooth 5.3. However, the device heavily relies on an internet connection, meaning it’s essentially useless without one.

Priced at $349, the Windows 365 Link will be available next year. But to use it, businesses will also need to subscribe to Windows 365, with plans starting at $28 per month (approximately PKR 7,750).

While the concept offers a more affordable, cloud-based solution for businesses, some might still prefer Apple’s Mac mini, which costs $599 and offers strong local hardware. The Mac mini doesn’t depend on cloud connectivity and is a more versatile desktop for various needs, making it a more attractive choice for users who require robust performance without the cloud reliance.

As businesses shift toward cloud computing, devices like the Windows 365 Link offer an interesting solution for companies focused on security and minimizing local hardware costs. However, for those who need more independence from internet connections and stronger local performance, the Mac mini still stands out. #Microsoft #Windows365Link #CloudComputing #MacMini #TechInnovation #BusinessSolutions #CloudDevices #PCNews #MicrosoftIgnite
