Ban lifted: PIA, Pakistani airlines can fly directly to Europe

In a significant development for Pakistan's aviation sector, the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has officially lifted the ban on Pakistani airlines, including Pakistan International Airlines (PIA). This allows them to resume direct flights to Europe after a three-year suspension, which began in 2020 due to safety and licensing concerns.

The suspension, which had halted direct flights between Pakistan and European destinations, was a result of issues related to pilot licenses. In 2020, it was revealed that a number of pilots in Pakistan held "dubious" licenses, prompting EASA to impose a temporary ban. However, following thorough audits and significant improvements in Pakistan's aviation standards, the ban has now been lifted.

Defense and Aviation Minister Khawaja Asif expressed his satisfaction with the decision, highlighting that the most recent audit rated Pakistani airlines better than many global carriers. He credited this success to the government's focus on enhancing safety standards and professionalizing the aviation sector. The minister also pointed out that Airblue, another Pakistani airline, has been granted the necessary certification to operate in Europe, further boosting the country's aviation prospects.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif welcomed the decision, stating that the lifting of the ban would not only improve PIA’s reputation but also bring significant financial benefits. He added that this development would make it easier for Pakistanis living in Europe to travel home.

The ban's lifting follows years of hard work and dedication from Pakistan’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and PIA management, who worked closely with the European Commission and EASA to meet stringent safety requirements. According to the Director General of the CAA, this achievement was the result of tireless efforts from the entire team, and they are now focusing on maintaining these high standards.

This is a momentous occasion for Pakistan's aviation industry, as it will open new opportunities for travel and strengthen the national economy. Passengers will once again be able to fly directly from Pakistan to European destinations with confidence, knowing that the highest safety standards are being met.
