Bail granted to PTI's Omar Ayub, other leaders in GHQ attack case

On Friday, the Rawalpindi Anti-Terrorism Court granted bail to several senior leaders of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), including Opposition Leader in the National Assembly, Omar Ayub, and former Punjab Law Minister, Raja Basharat. These leaders were arrested in connection with the GHQ gate attack case. The arrests occurred outside Adiala Jail on Thursday, right after 60 individuals, including PTI Chairman Imran Khan, were formally indicted in the case.

During the court hearing, Judge Amjad Shah expressed strong disapproval of the arrests, questioning why the accused were detained even though the Peshawar High Court had already granted them bail. The judge criticized the police for failing to follow the court's earlier order.

The court ordered the immediate release of Omar Ayub, Raja Basharat, and the other PTI leaders, pointing out serious procedural errors. Along with Ayub and Basharat, PTI leaders Ahmed Chattha, Majid Daniyal, and Malik Azeem were also taken into custody by the Attock Police. Their arrest came shortly after Imran Khan and other PTI leaders were formally indicted in the high-profile case related to the May 9, 2023, protests.

The GHQ attack was one of the most significant events in Pakistan’s political history. It followed violent protests after the arrest of Imran Khan from Islamabad High Court in the Al-Qadir Trust case. These protests led to major disruptions, especially targeting the military’s General Headquarters (GHQ), which became a flashpoint in the country’s political unrest. The case continues to be a significant part of Pakistan's ongoing political drama.
