The demand for Virtual Private Network (VPN) services in Pakistan has reached an all-time high, following a significant increase in social media restrictions and internet disruptions. According to an independent report by Top10VPN, VPN usage surged by 102% on November 25, compared to the daily average of the past month. The situation escalated further on November 26, with demand spiking by 213% above the baseline.
This sharp increase in VPN usage comes amid growing concerns over government-imposed restrictions on social media platforms, especially with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) preparing for protests. To control the situation, the government introduced additional measures, including limiting media sharing on WhatsApp, in anticipation of the demonstrations. As a result, social media platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook experienced widespread disruptions, leaving many users unable to access these services without a VPN.
Downdetector.com, a platform that tracks online outages, confirmed that several social media services faced technical issues in Pakistan, further frustrating users who were already struggling to connect. The reasons behind these disruptions remain unclear, as the authorities have not made an official statement about the extent of the restrictions.
The suddenness and lack of transparency regarding these restrictions have led to a lot of frustration among the public. Many citizens have turned to VPNs to bypass the disruptions, but this workaround has its own challenges. Users report slower internet speeds and frequent connectivity issues when using VPN services, which only adds to the inconvenience.
Alongside social media outages, several regions in Punjab, including Multan, Rajanpur, Gujrat, and Dera Ghazi Khan, have experienced significant internet disruptions. This has further complicated communication, with residents in these areas struggling to access basic online services. The surge in VPN use highlights the growing frustration of users who are trying to stay connected amid increasing restrictions on online platforms.
