Saudi Arabia launches world’s longest driverless metro in Riyadh

Saudi Arabia is about to launch the first phase of its highly anticipated Riyadh Metro on November 27, marking a major milestone in the country's development plans. The Riyadh Metro, part of the broader Vision 2030 initiative, aims to transform Riyadh into a thriving global city. This ambitious $22.5 billion (SR84.4 billion) project, which was initially approved in 2012, has faced several challenges, including delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and logistical hurdles. However, despite these setbacks, the launch of the metro is an important step forward in improving the city's infrastructure and public transportation system.

The first phase of the Riyadh Metro will include three of the six planned metro lines, with the remaining three lines expected to begin operation by mid-December. Once completed, the system will span an impressive 176 kilometers, making it the longest driverless metro system in the world. This new transportation network is designed to alleviate traffic congestion in the city and reduce its dependence on private cars.

The first phase will serve some of Riyadh’s most important areas, including routes from Al Orouba to Batha, the King Khalid International Airport Road, and the intersection of Abdulrahman Bin Auf Street with Sheikh Hassan Bin Hussein Street. These routes will help thousands of daily commuters easily access vital parts of the city.

The Riyadh Metro is a key part of Saudi Arabia's broader urban development goals. As the city’s population continues to grow and demand for more efficient public transportation increases, the metro system will play a central role in modernizing the city’s infrastructure. By reducing traffic, improving air quality, and enhancing the daily lives of residents, the metro is set to contribute significantly to both the economic and environmental goals of Vision 2030.

The project will also create thousands of jobs during its construction and ongoing operations, further boosting the local economy.
