PTA Blocks 200 Illegal VPNs and Over 27,000 Mobile SIMs in Major Crackdown

ISLAMABAD – The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has launched a significant crackdown targeting illegal social media apps and virtual private networks (VPNs) operating within the country. As part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen cyber security and regulate online content, the PTA has blocked more than 200 unauthorized VPNs and 27,000 mobile SIM cards linked to illegal app usage.

The crackdown is part of the PTA’s enhanced efforts to maintain cyber vigilance in Pakistan, aided by the deployment of a firewall system developed in collaboration with a Chinese company. This system will enable the PTA to monitor, filter, and regulate online activities more effectively. The initiative comes as the government continues to focus on increasing digital safety and combatting the use of unauthorized apps and services.

Key Actions Taken by PTA:

  • 200 Illegal VPNs Blocked: PTA has targeted unauthorized VPNs, crucial for ensuring online safety and regulating internet traffic in Pakistan.
  • 27,000 SIM Cards Deactivated: More than 27,000 mobile SIMs linked to unlicensed and illegal app usage have been shut down.
  • 469 Unregistered Mobile Apps Blocked: The PTA has also shut down over 469 unregistered mobile applications, which had been operating outside of regulatory guidelines.
  • 24 Illegal Social Media Apps Blocked: URLs for 24 social media apps that were operating without proper authorization have been blocked as part of the operation.

The operation is overseen by the Cyber Vigilance Branch, led by Brigadier Mukarram, who is directly supervising the efforts to monitor and regulate VPN usage and illegal online activities. The PTA currently oversees 20,000 registered VPNs, with more than 700,000 users relying on legally approved VPN services. However, reports suggest that around 27 million users in the country continue to use unauthorized VPNs.

The crackdown focuses on targeting non-compliant applications and users, while legitimate and authorized apps will continue to operate without disruption. The PTA has made it clear that the regulatory action against illegal apps will continue as part of its commitment to strengthening Pakistan’s digital security.
