PM Shehbaz Sharif Arrives in Baku for COP29 Summit
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has arrived in Baku, Azerbaijan, to attend the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The conference will bring together global leaders to discuss and take action on climate change. PM Sharif’s visit marks an important opportunity for Pakistan to share its concerns and priorities regarding the climate crisis, which has deeply impacted the country.
Upon arrival at Baku airport, the Prime Minister was warmly received by Vugar Valeh Oglu Mustafayev, Azerbaijan’s Minister of Defence Industry. PM Sharif is accompanied by key members of his delegation, including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Tariq Fatemi.
During the summit, PM Shehbaz Sharif will address the World Leaders’ Climate Action Summit on November 13, where he will highlight the urgent dangers of climate change that Pakistan faces, especially the devastating effects of floods, droughts, and extreme weather events. He will also participate in several high-level events and discussions on the sidelines of the summit, focusing on climate adaptation, mitigation, and global cooperation.
At the Pakistan Pavilion, the country will host multiple events to raise awareness about its climate priorities, such as “Glaciers 2025: Action for Glaciers,” hosted by Tajikistan’s President Emomali Rahmon. PM Sharif will also join discussions on “Delivering Early Warning for All” organized by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, focusing on extreme heat and global temperature rise.
The Prime Minister shared his excitement on social media, describing Baku as a “city that beautifully bridges cultures and continents,” symbolizing the unity needed to tackle the global climate challenge.
