In a significant move, the Jammu and Kashmir legislative assembly has passed a resolution calling for the restoration of Article 370, which granted the region special status under the Indian Constitution. This resolution was approved by a majority vote, despite strong opposition from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members.
The resolution was introduced by Chaudhary Surinder Singh, the leader of the National Conference (NC) and the Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. In his statement, Chaudhary urged the Indian government to engage in dialogue with the region’s leaders and work towards reinstating Jammu and Kashmir’s special status. He emphasized that the region’s constitutional protections, which were revoked in 2019, should be restored to respect the legitimate aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, while also maintaining the unity of the nation.
Chaudhary also stressed that the restoration of Article 370 should be carried out in a balanced way that prioritizes the rights and desires of the region’s residents. The motion highlighted the need for an approach that recognizes the unique political and cultural identity of Jammu and Kashmir, while also ensuring that national interests are upheld.
However, BJP members strongly opposed the resolution, arguing that it was not on the day’s agenda and should not have been introduced. In response, they staged protests in the assembly, chanting slogans against the motion. Despite the disruption and protests, Speaker Abdul Rehman Radha proceeded with the vote, and the resolution was passed. This move highlights the growing divide between regional parties, like the National Conference, and the central government in Delhi.
The passage of this resolution marks a crucial point in the ongoing debate over Jammu and Kashmir's constitutional status and its future political trajectory. It is likely to fuel further discussions about the region’s autonomy and its relationship with the Indian government, particularly after the revocation of Article 370 in 2019.
