Israeli Airstrikes Kill Dozens Across Gaza, Including 27 in One Attack
Israeli airstrikes on Gaza continue to claim lives, with reports indicating that dozens of people were killed in attacks across the region. One of the deadliest strikes took place on Thursday afternoon, when an Israeli airstrike hit a multi-story building in the northern Gaza Strip, killing at least 27 people. The building, located in Jabalya, was home to the Mbahouh family and was sheltering more than 50 displaced individuals, according to Mahmoud Basal, spokesperson for Gaza’s Civil Defense. Many of the victims were reportedly trapped in the building's warehouse at the bottom floor when the attack occurred.
The Israeli military has not yet confirmed the specific target of the strike, but the ongoing military campaign in Gaza is part of Israel's major offensive since the October 7 Hamas-led attacks. CNN has reached out to the Israeli military for further details regarding the nature of the target in Jabalya.
On the same day, two other Israeli airstrikes targeted Gaza City, including one on the Al-Shati refugee camp, and another at Al-Rimal School, which left at least four people dead. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the airstrike on Al-Shati, while claiming that Al-Rimal School was being used by Hamas as a “command and control center.” The IDF did not comment on the second attack without the release of specific coordinates.
Since the outbreak of hostilities in early October, the Israeli military campaign has devastated Gaza, with whole neighborhoods destroyed and large parts of the territory rendered uninhabitable. According to the Gaza Ministry of Health, at least 43,469 Palestinians have been killed, and 102,561 others have been injured.
Human rights organizations have raised alarms about the dire conditions in Jabalya, a heavily populated refugee camp in northern Gaza. Medical Aid for Palestinians, a UK-based NGO, has accused Israel of making survival in northern Gaza “impossible” and of pursuing a strategy of forcible expulsion and sustained pressure on the population.
