A Pakistani court has issued a non-bailable arrest warrant for Bushra Bibi, the wife of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, in connection with a £190 million corruption case. The court has directed the police to arrest her and bring her to court on November 26.
This decision was made by the Accountability Court in Islamabad after Bushra Bibi failed to appear in court again. She had previously requested to be excused from attending due to health reasons, but the court rejected her request. The court considered her absence as a delay tactic and emphasized that she had missed the last eight hearings.
The prosecution argued that her repeated absence was intentionally holding up the case. They also pointed out that the medical certificate she provided was from Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar, but it was notarized in Islamabad, which raised doubts about its authenticity.
As a result of her continued absence, the court decided to cancel her bail and issue the arrest warrant. Bushra Bibi’s guarantor was also given a show-cause notice for failing to ensure her appearance in court.
The case centers around allegations of corruption involving a large sum of money, and the defence lawyers have submitted a list of 16 potential witnesses, including notable figures such as the Vice Chancellor of Government College University Lahore. However, lawyers from the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) argue that this list is simply another attempt to delay the trial. They pointed out that while the court can call judicial witnesses, it should not do so at this stage of the proceedings.
The court has postponed further hearings to November 26, with a strict order for Bushra Bibi’s presence. Imran Khan’s family members, including his three sisters, were present in the courtroom during the proceedings.
