Bill extending tenure of services chiefs up to 5 years adopted by NA

National Assembly Extends Tenure for Military Chiefs in Key Amendment

Today, Pakistan’s National Assembly passed a significant bill to extend the service tenure of the nation’s top military leaders, including the Army, Navy, and Air Force chiefs, from three to five years. The move aims to bring continuity and stability to the leadership of Pakistan's armed forces.

Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif introduced the amendment, which updates the Pakistan Army Act, 1952, Pakistan Navy Ordinance, 1961, and Pakistan Air Force Act, 1953 to reflect the new five-year term. This change aligns the tenure across all branches, ensuring consistency and making way for longer-term leadership planning.

In his address, Minister Asif explained that the amendments would maintain uniformity in service tenure, allowing each chief to complete their extended term without the standard retirement limits applying during their appointed time. This change also gives flexibility for potential reappointments or extensions, if needed, without resetting the clock on their leadership.

The assembly also approved related amendments to bring the Pakistan Navy Act, 1961 and Pakistan Air Force Act, 1953 into line with the new policy. Following the passage, Speaker Ayaz Sadiq adjourned the session until tomorrow morning.

This decision marks a notable shift in Pakistan’s military policy, ensuring leadership stability in times when regional and domestic challenges require a steady hand at the helm of the armed forces.
